The clean, futuristic design of Smeg’s latest appliances can be said to be pushing trends in the kitchen, hence the creative direction behind Janai Anselmi Styling’s advertising collaboration with photographer Michele Aboud. Marrying the cool steel, smooth glass and glossy iron of stovetops, ovens and wall mount grillers, JAS fashioned up three models to appear in cutting edge outfits with similar metallic fabrics and sharp lines. Dramatic hair by Michele McQuillan and make-up by Nigel Stanislaus sat perfectly with the couture garments, constructed by Leonardo Salinas and Justine Davis. The overall feel of the ad was hard-edge, dramatic fashion complimenting the design of the Smeg kitchen range.

Ship Song Project

During 2011 Photographer Simon Harsent shot a personal series titled ‘Into the Abyss’ which Janai provided wardrobe for. When hearing about The Ship Song Project (campaign created around The Sydney Opera House and creative agency Three Drunk Monkeys) Simon suggested the series as an opportunity to incorporate with the famous building. The end result thanks to some expert retouching by Cream Studios, is a film and song, which represent a unique collaboration between some of the most amazing artists in Australia – not to mention the world.

When photographer Zahn Pithers approached Janai Anselmi Styling to dress a young troop of male dancers for personal project ‘Bustin’ we knew it would be a fun assignment. Set a-top Sydney Park, Pete decked the boys out in solid brights and funky accessories, vibing ‘So You Think You Can Dance’. Splashed with faux sweat, and some real, Zahn caught gravity defying moves as each leapt higher and further pushing their physical means. Big credit to dancers Chris van Doren, Oscar Wilson (The Jazz Factory), Keiynan Londsdale (FAME the musical) and Jordan Rodrigues (Dance Academy – TV show) who worked hard on the day with some exciting results.

The crack of dawn saw Pete on his way to WoyWoy wharf to meet photographer Jeremy Park & Co. for Men’s Health Magazine’s ‘Be a Better Catch’ campaign earlier this summer. The fisher(wo)man’s super strength was created by shooting mannequin legs on a makeshift crane and then retouching our male talent in hanging upside down. Pouring buckets of water over said model became tiresome so at one point we just threw him into the river, much more effective. Overall it was a fun day filled with heavy lifting of a 90kg+ male fitness model, creative problem solving and barrels of laughs.

Our first major ‘green’ project had Janai and Jo team up with photographer Simon Harsent and The Monkey’s agency to shoot UBank's latest home loans campaign. “Have you let your home loan go?” was the tag line used across a series of lifestyle vignettes depicting everyday home loaners covered in algae and moss. Left stagnant, this swamp of ground cover creeps over the floor, furniture and the unaware couple, until they are almost unrecognisable. Using specially imported live moss from Tasmania and copious amounts of glue sticks, Janai and Jo meticulously attached the greenery to any available surface to create this overgrown effect.

A less physically exhausting but just as poignant job that JAS has been involved in this season was for Sony with photographer Andreas Bommert. Art Director Nils Eberhardt conceived several panoramic adverts depicting polar opposites interacting at an incredible distance. We see Little Red Riding Hood meeting The Wolf, a same dress fashion faux pas between two girls and a tween boy “grossed out” by the cootie infested kisses of a tween girl. Shot in studio and then later machined and stretched, the end result is a long banner of a panoramic environments.

National Gallery of Australia

We were approached to help promote the National Gallery of Australia’s newly developed sites’ landscape. Pushing for an international audience, a theme was developed around creating a stereotypical ‘Aussie’ backyard with a shock value. Situating some kitsch iconic props such as a Weber BBQ and manual roller lawn mower, an odd environment was created with ultra modern, geometric lines of the new landscape clashing with the 1950s style family. The Piece de resistance however was Geoff Ostling, whose entire body is covered in tattoos of native Australian flora. A perfect blend into the natively planted landscapes of NGA, Geoff's nude body will certainly draw attention, along with the odd Australian family "living" in the grounds of the National Gallery of Australia.

Further into Spring our entire team was called for all hands on deck, travelling south of Sydney to the Macquarie Pass National Park with photographer Adam Taylor, to shoot Qantas’ ‘Spirit of Luxury’ ad campaign. Using NSW’s natural rainforest as a backdrop, JAS strategically placed exotic, tropical flora to imitate the Qantas Business Class Lounge and it’s own ‘Living Wall’. The renowned red lounges designed specially for Qantas by Marc Newson were transported from Alexandria to the site, and then hauled into the depths of the rainforest.

South Cape Cheese

This South Cape Cheese campaign was released in April to coincide with the royal wedding. Working with photographer Matt Hoyle, Janai and Pete created a series of potentially disastrous social events, only to be saved by an adorned platter of delicious South Cape Cheese. A pink sweater wearing mummy’s-boy is introducing the love of his life for the first time… scary goth hardcore girl in high biker boots and shaved pixie hair-cut. A young bride is horrified at the discovery that her mother has made her a meringue-like wedding dress. Three distraught, die-hard, wannabe princesses dressed in matching velour tracksuits, tiara’s and embellished Ugg-Boots sit with make-up streaming down their faces watching the wedding. This shoot called for some extreme sourcing, no stone was left unturned with our team sourcing from Terry Hills, Penrith and the Shire.

Opera Australia - La Boheme

In late 2010, Janai, Jo and Nate took on the project of dressing and propping the modern interpretation by Opera Australia of the Italian romance story La Boheme. Set in cold Berlin it is a dramatic tale of love emerging in darker times. The promotional shots were staged at Sun Studios using an existing exposed brick wall and painted flats by Phil Skelton. Photographer Chris Kappa worked with the JAS team on the day to accentuate luscious fabrics in a romantic colour palette such as blood red velvets, light latte linens and coppery metallic’s, inspired from a huge Persian Rug. Timeless antique furniture in deep cherry woods and marbled stone were placed on set, including aged oil paintings and world globes, as well as kitsch vintage pieces such as a toy carousel and bird cage.

The cast’s wardrobe took elements of their surrounding colours and textures into account to help marry them into the environment. Focus was preferred on the cast’s character but each needed an accent of some sort to personify their characters attributes. This included sequin sleeves, cherry red pocket squares and bronze waistcoats. The mood of the play is dark just like many dramatic romances… so black was a strong feature, broken up by deep raspberry and charcoal greys. The men in soft tailored suits and women in courageous necklines and featured sleeves. Each outfit was put together to not represent a particular Era in history, but to come across slightly timeless … Love has no historic date!

Good Weekend Stories

Last month's Good Weekend Magazine fashion stories took us into the cooler seasons of the year. A silvery-white winter is where we began our Poncho story, inspired from Pringle of Scotland AW 11/12. When keeping a monochromatic palette, pieces need to be identified through texture and tone. Wools and weaves combined with printed patterning create points of focus, such as a loose knit poncho or grey tweed pants. With accessories it’s best to keep it streamlined and not too fussy. So sterling silver jewelry and metallic sheen bags with low detail work well.

For the second story we injected a bold colour, keeping with the monochromatic palette. Raspberry Red is a total showstopper! Our influences grew from Sonia Rykiel’s AW 2011 runway where she shows a figure hugging dress, with a floaty sleeved blouse and red hot Mary-Janes. A vision of a 1940’s independent woman with confidence, and courage and a little bit of old Hollywood glamour. Pulling off an entire outfit in such a bold palette takes confidence. To not lose your womanly curves, synched waists and belts keep an hour-glass figure. Brands such as Anna Thomas and Scanlan Theodore host very strong pieces in this trending colour, and lighter tones in handbags can sit beautifully on top of this deep red, blue based outfit.

The Actors Studio

We recently teamed up with photographer Michele Aboud, hair stylist Michael Wolff and make-up artist Justine Purdue to shoot a story that takes it cues from 1950s New York. Our direct inspiration was the famous Actors Studio on W 44^th St in Manhattan, where Lee Strasberg developed the method acting technique. The result was a modern take on the aesthetics, silhouettes and energy of, among others, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Sidney Poitier. And with gorgeous models to boot. Makes us think we were born a couple decades too late!

In the before shots the Tiger was depicted in its natural environment and the singer at a rock concert. The images were displayed on huge digital screen at Westfield Bondi Junction. The before images would come up on screen then zoom into the images above. Cool Ahh...

Earlier this year I posted some behind the scenes images of Nate and I garden styling. The image on the left is the end result of our tropical garden balcony creation. The balcony itself was only about 2.5m x 80cm so there was challenge to fit established palm trees on the narrow ledge. The drummer execution was set built in studio and extensively propped. Note my artistic handy work in the painting - copyright free! All elements were shot by Gary Sheppard and combined in these fictional landscapes.

Jenni Hare is a close friend who has been based in London for the last two years. We shot this story featuring the stunning Sam Doughty early this year. We just spent two days shooting at the stunning Coco Republic complex in Alexandria for Good Weekend. I love that Coco Republic have such a consistent style across their brands and that their stores are so well styled. Parquetry flooring, distressed leather and salvaged marine timber are complemented with large scale photographs and a huge range of authentic vintage accessories. Styling props include a life size timber boat and taxidermic peacocks.

Another early morning, this time at the MCA for the Arnsdorf collection entitled 'Opticks'. Nude, raw umber, dusty mauve and brush stroke prints - I was in heaven. The collection explored reflection, refraction, inflections and the colours of light. The garment construction evoked shards of light criss crossing across the body and the prints played with the colours thrown by this exercise. Sunlight poured across the floor on diagonal lines which the models had to walk through. One model per garment meant a pretty special finale.

Once again I have to confess being very biased toward the location. Despite having worked at the Opera house for several years I am always blown away by Jorn Utzon's architecture. I had never been to this reception area of the concert hall and the early morning sun sparkling of the water, brilliant purple carpet and visible 'bones' of the building were very seductive. Dion Lee's collection 'Facade' related strongly to the visible architectural supports with is traditional tailoring techniques, visceral pleating and layers of synthetic mesh that scaffolded the body. Rorschach inkblot prints wrapped the body and echoed the underlying anatomical structure whilst crystals were organically grown around the heels of the shoes adding another transparent structural element. Very cool!

RAFW 2010 Romance was Born

I have to confess this is the first Romance was Born show that I have attended. I have often viewed the collection on the rack and look books but nothing prepared me for this. As mentioned venue is everything and arriving at the historic University of Sydney building at 10pm is eerie to say the least. The building is only lit from within the walkways by yellow lights, everything else is enveloped in darkness. After climbing several internal staircases decorated with RWB installations we entered an amazing chapel like room. A runway of dirt was bordered with rocks and flora fauna, at the end a limestone grotto created from swamp like tree trunks covered in lichen and moss. The show was more like a theatrical rock concert than a fashion show, instrumental music built anticipation until the audience was cheering every outfit. RWB are known for having some pretty extravagant creations, this time they explored in theory prehistoric dinosaurs entering Renaissance cities. I cant wait to see this collection close up, every outfit represents some kind of jurassic creature and the list of collaborators in creating this show is unprecedented.

I won't bore you with endless shots from fashion week but here are a few of my favorites. I love offsite venues, the ambiance and drama of the space when well matched to the collection adds so much character. Therese Rawsthorne is favorite of my personal wardrobe, I love the sensual volume, tailored details and soft colour palette. The S/S 10/11 collection builds on this tradition and injects dramatic red, bandage and hardware details into the staple. I love the nude bandage bike short, body suit and heels with pewter bangles worn on the ankle.

Late last year we styled the attached campaign for HSBC shot by Sean Izzard and art directed by John Lam. We were in charge of all details from set build and decorating, sourcing mannequins, props and wardrobe. We also created a kit for 13 HSBC branches nationwide to assemble 39 mannequins and clothing as an in store extension of the print campaign.

The campaign has run as web, outdoor, in store and print including broadsheet overlays in national papers.

Nate and I had the pleasure of creating this tropical paradise from scratch recently for photographer Gary Sheppard. We used a range of established palms, scrubs, hanging plants, tropical flowers and vines. Artificial pants and flowers were added to include species that were out of season and avoid wilting in the heat. I am thinking I might change career when I am around fifty and become a floral designer.

Last month Good Weekend magazine ran this spread for their summer special edition in the SMH and The Age. I art directed and styled the story, shot by Damain Bennett at Pretty Beach House, Killcare.

This tropical story featured a capsule holiday wardrobe comprised of soft fluid dress and quirky swimwear. Some highlights include a Mrs Press hand painted jumpsuit and a silk Paradise kimono by Carl Kapp. Delicate fabrics, luscious colours and unique prints feature throughout this dreamy effervescent shoot.

Olay - Age Beautifully

I worked on these images almost two years ago with Chris Mollison as an initiative shoot for Nic Buckinham from Saatchi & Saatchi. It was put on the back burner for a long time but was just published as double page spreads in The Australian Ballet Playbill (theatre program) for Sleeping Beauty at The Sydney Opera house. The campaign aims to celebrate women of all ages by blending beautiful objects to numerically recreate their age. We painstakingly shot this over 2 months, some items individually and others over a wire frame structure, wrapped with satin. Hundreds of images were carefully combined by Jason Riddell to create the final effect.

These are four executions from a beautiful campaign we styled this year for Mission Australia, shot by Simon Harsent and art directed by Dan Oliva. I worked with model maker Ed Horne and a team of craftspeople to produce six pairs of wings in one week. Mission Australia had previously established the wing metaphor but had only executed it in CGI. It was great to go back to basics and shoot this all through camera. The campaign depicted individuals whose lives had changed as a result of Mission Australia’s intervention, crafting these huge wings out of everyday materials found in their environment.

Most people will attest to the fact that i am the worlds most unsporting New Zealander consequently I had never heard of Deans. I was amazed at his calm, lovely personality and his tolerance for being dressed in retro tracksuits. To be sensitive to this environment I used a warm neutral colour palette with accents of yellow and orange and light weight luxurious fabrics to create this feminine, country feel. Special clothing had to be constructed to hold its colour and move well underwater. Optus - 'We're right behind business'

Part of a ten shot Optus campaign shot by Damien Pleming with creative by Paul Carpenter. It is the first time in many years that Optus has branched out from shooting just animals. Paul had the daunting task of having to continuously come up with animal shadows and business situations.

Gun Amnesty

I worked on this great campaign for Gun Amnesty with the very talented Toby Burrows and the clever boys from DDB. The campaign, which shows acts of violence caused by unregistered guns had to feature only talent with impeccable police records, which proved harder than it looks! Chrissie Wright and I styled it by stripping back the found locations and in some instances decades of dirt to create this gritty tone. To view the whole campaign click here
